India's defense sector is opening a new opportunity for the private firm segment. The move comes as DRDO invites companies to join DRDO weapon production for strategic systems.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation has issued an Expression of Interest (EoI). It seeks private companies for development-cum-production partnerships in strategic weapon systems.
The initiative covers missile and bomb systems developed by DRDO's Department of Missiles and Strategic Systems. The department handles key strategic programs, including the Agni series.
The move could give private defense manufacturers a bigger role in India's strategic weapons supply chain. Companies will work with DRDO during development, testing, and production.
DRDO plans to select at least two companies for each project. This approach will allow multiple firms to participate in strategic weapon manufacturing. Selected companies will first undergo technical and financial evaluation. Eligible firms will then receive project-specific tenders.
The selected partners will support several stages of the program, including:
The initiative could also create opportunities for companies with existing defense manufacturing capabilities. Firms with suitable infrastructure can seek entry into this strategic segment.

The opportunity comes with several requirements for participating companies. Firms must hold an industrial license for defense manufacturing. They must also have a PESO license for handling and storing explosives. DRDO will assess the financial and technical strength of each applicant.
A company's net worth must exceed 5% of the expected work value. DRDO will also assess production capacity based on project requirements.
Companies may need to demonstrate their ability to produce more than 50 or 100 units. The required volume will depend on the specific weapon project. A DRDO-appointed expert committee will inspect shortlisted companies. The committee will assess their manufacturing facilities and technical capabilities.
The initiative could change how private companies participate in India's strategic defense sector. Private manufacturers have increasingly entered areas once dominated by public-sector companies. Strategic weapon production, however, remains a highly sensitive area. The new partnership model could allow DRDO to combine its research capabilities with private manufacturing capacity.
Companies such as Solar Aerospace and Defense and Tata Advanced Systems are expected to explore upcoming opportunities. The initiative could also reduce dependence on established public-sector manufacturers. Bharat Dynamics has traditionally played an important role in missile and strategic weapon production.
For India's private defense industry, the opportunity extends beyond manufacturing contracts. Companies could gain experience in developing, testing, and producing strategic weapon systems alongside DRDO.
