Defense manufacturing in Kanpur is gaining momentum as Uttar Pradesh develops its six-node Defense Industrial Corridor.
The corridor is emerging as a major production base for ammunition, missiles, defense textiles and protective equipment.
Kanpur has attracted investment proposals worth around Rs 12,803 crore, the highest among the six nodes. The wider corridor has secured proposals worth Rs 35,526.76 crore.
So far, 62 companies have received land, while nine units are already operational. This progress signals a shift from investment commitments to actual production.
It also strengthens Uttar Pradesh’s role in India’s push for indigenous defense manufacturing and stronger domestic supply chains.
Kanpur has emerged as the largest investment destination within Uttar Pradesh’s Defense Industrial Corridor, with proposals worth approximately Rs 12,803 crore. The city, historically known as the “Manchester of the East”, now hosts projects focused on ammunition, missiles, defense textiles and protective gear.
“Aligarh has emerged as a hub for small arms, defense equipment and military supplies, while Kanpur -- traditionally known as the “Manchester of the East” is becoming a center for ammunition, missiles, defence textiles and protective gear,” said UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
The defense manufacturing ecosystem in Kanpur forms part of a wider six-node network covering Kanpur, Jhansi, Lucknow, Aligarh, Agra and Chitrakoot. Across these nodes, companies have received land for projects covering multiple segments of aerospace and defense production. The Uttar Pradesh Defense Industrial Corridor aims to reduce foreign dependence and strengthen indigenous aerospace and defense capabilities.

The wider corridor has attracted Rs 35,526.76 crore in investment proposals. Besides Kanpur, Jhansi has attracted around Rs 11,738 crore, followed by Lucknow at Rs 4,850 crore, Aligarh at Rs 4,490 crore, Chitrakoot at Rs 880 crore and Agra at Rs 607 crore.
The corridor has acquired around 2,040 hectares of land, with 977.54 hectares allotted to industries. A total of 62 companies have received land across the six nodes, while lease deeds remain in process for another 11 units. These figures show the expansion of the physical industrial base supporting defense manufacturing in the state.
Adani Defense & Aerospace has started production at its Rs 1,500 crore ammunition plant in Kanpur, marking one of the corridor’s most significant operational milestones. The facility represents the largest investment among the operational projects reported in the corridor and demonstrates the transition from announced investments to manufacturing activity.
Other operational projects are also expanding the corridor’s product mix. Amitec Electronics in Aligarh manufactures electronic warfare and satellite systems, while Werywin Defense and Nitya Creations produce small arms and precision components. In Lucknow, Aerolloy Technologies manufactures titanium castings, while BrahMos Aerospace is assembling the BrahMos NG missile.
The state government has identified different manufacturing strengths across the corridor. Aligarh has developed into a hub for small arms, defense equipment and military supplies, while Kanpur focuses on ammunition, missiles, defense textiles and protective equipment. Lucknow has emerged around advanced defense technologies and BrahMos missile production.
The broader ecosystem also covers artillery shells, drones, bulletproof jackets and advanced communication systems. Uttar Pradesh says its large skilled workforce and extensive MSME base provide additional support for defense manufacturing and related supply chains.
