Delhi Roads are set for a major upgrade after the Union Cabinet approved the construction of an Rs 6,969 Crore Tunnel connecting the Dwarka Expressway with Nelson Mandela Marg in Vasant Kunj.
The project is part of the government's larger infrastructure push aimed at reducing traffic congestion, improving connectivity, and cutting travel time across the national capital.
Along with the Delhi Tunnel Project, the Cabinet also cleared a new high-speed highway project in Uttar Pradesh worth Rs 7,145 crore, taking the total investment in the two projects to more than Rs 14,000 crore.
Within the first phase of the plan, Delhi Roads will benefit from an 8.1-km six-lane tunnel on NH-148AE, which will directly connect Urban Extension Road-2 (UER-II)/Dwarka Expressway with Vasant Kunj in South Delhi. The decision was announced by Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw after the Cabinet meeting.
The Delhi Tunnel Project will be developed at a total capital cost of Rs 6,969 crore. The tunnel is expected to provide faster travel between West Delhi and South Delhi, reducing congestion on existing roads while improving access to key areas.

Ashwini Vaishnaw also said that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is planning another elevated corridor between AIIMS and Mahipalpur, which is expected to further ease congestion in the capital.
Apart from improving road connectivity, the project is expected to create around 7.54 lakh person-days of direct employment and 9.80 lakh person-days of indirect employment, giving a boost to jobs during the construction phase.

The Cabinet also approved the construction of the 117.7-km four/six-lane access-controlled Kanpur-Kabrai section of NH-34 in Uttar Pradesh at an estimated cost of Rs 7,145 crore.
The highway project aims to provide seamless and faster connectivity between Kanpur and Kabrai, while improving links to Sagar, Bhopal, and other parts of Madhya Pradesh.

Designed for operating speeds of 80 to 100 kmph, the highway is expected to reduce travel time between Kanpur and Kabrai from 3.5 hours to just 1.5 hours.
The two projects are expected to improve regional connectivity, support smoother movement of people and goods, and strengthen the highway network in North India.
According to the government, the Kanpur-Kabrai Highway project alone is expected to generate nearly 1.2 crore person-days of direct and indirect employment, while the Delhi Tunnel Project will create more than 17 lakh person-days of employment.
With investments exceeding Rs 14,000 crore, the approved projects are expected to reduce travel time, ease traffic congestion, improve logistics, and support economic growth in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and nearby regions.
