In a move that strengthens India’s push for self-reliance in defence, the government has granted a manufacturing licence to Zen Technologies to produce key air defence cannons.
The licence, issued under the Arms Act, 1959, allows the Hyderabad-based firm to manufacture 12.7mm cannons, 23mm cannons, 30mm cannons, and 40mm cannons. These systems are widely used across air defence systems and naval platforms, and are increasingly important in countering modern aerial threats.
These rapid-fire cannons act as a final layer of protection against low-flying targets such as drones and loitering munitions. With drone warfare becoming more common in conflicts around the world, such systems are now essential for protecting borders, military assets, and critical infrastructure.
According to the company, the cannons can be integrated with advanced fire-control systems, radar, and electro-optical sensors. This enables accurate targeting and improves response time, making them effective in a range of operational scenarios, from battlefield defence to securing sensitive installations.

The licence also marks an important shift for Zen Technologies. Known primarily for its defence training simulators and anti-drone technology, the company is now stepping into full-scale combat equipment manufacturing. This expansion is expected to open up new growth opportunities and strengthen its position in India’s defence manufacturing sector.
The development aligns with the government’s Make in India and “Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured” (IDDM) initiative, which focuses on reducing dependence on imports and promoting domestic production. By encouraging companies like Zen Technologies to manufacture critical defence equipment locally, the government aims to build a stronger and more resilient Indian defence industry.
Experts believe this move comes at a crucial time, as global security challenges continue to evolve. Compared to expensive missile systems, air defence cannons offer a more cost-effective and immediate solution for dealing with emerging threats, especially drone swarms.
Overall, the licence positions Zen Technologies to play a bigger role in India’s defence preparedness while supporting the country’s long-term goal of achieving defence self-reliance.
