Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd has approved an investment of ₹914 crore investment for multiple power transmission projects, strengthening the reliability and preparedness of India’s power grid. The approval was granted by the company’s Committee of Directors on Investment in Projects during its meeting held on January 20.
The sanctioned investment is primarily for the procurement of cold spare transformers and reactors, which are critical backup assets used to replace failed equipment in the transmission network. These assets help reduce outage duration and ensure faster restoration of power supply across regions.
Out of the total approved amount, ₹401.88 crore has been allocated for projects under the Western Regional Power Committee (WRPC). The North Eastern region will receive ₹166.33 crore under the North Eastern Regional Power Committee (NERPC).

The Southern Regional Power Committee (SRPC) has been granted ₹345.78 crore for similar equipment procurement. All the approved projects have a planned completion period of 30 months.
Cold spare transformers and reactors play a key role in maintaining grid stability, particularly as the transmission network expands and power demand rises. Their availability allows Power Grid to respond quickly to equipment failures, limiting disruptions and safeguarding system operations.
The investment approvals come at a time when the power transmission sector is focusing on strengthening infrastructure to support renewable energy integration and interstate power flows. Ensuring adequate backup capacity is increasingly important as grids handle higher loads and more variable generation sources.
Power Grid, a Maharatna PSU, is responsible for the majority of India’s interstate power transmission. The company continues to invest in network resilience and operational efficiency to support long-term grid reliability.
The approved expenditure is expected to improve system readiness across multiple regions and reinforce Power Grid’s role in maintaining uninterrupted electricity transmission nationwide.
