Energy transition remains central to Essar Group’s UK strategy. The company recently planned a USD 5–8 billion investment to accelerate decarbonization projects.
Energy transition initiatives will focus on transforming its Stanlow refinery into a hub for low-carbon fuels and clean energy investment.
Essar aims to align this expansion with its broader net zero strategy, targeting significant emission reductions across operations.
The investment will strengthen industrial competitiveness while advancing decarbonization projects in the UK energy sector.
Energy transition efforts will include hydrogen production, carbon capture, and fuel innovation, positioning Essar as a key player in Europe’s evolving clean energy investment landscape.
Energy transition efforts will center on Essar’s Stanlow refinery, where the company has already initiated large-scale decarbonization projects. Essar is developing the HyNet North West cluster, which will enable carbon capture and storage infrastructure. The company plans to cut carbon emissions by around 95 per cent at Stanlow through these initiatives.
"We are proud to mark 15 years since acquiring Stanlow. It remains a privilege to steward this critical asset, and we remain committed to its future. Our £4.3 billion investment pipeline represents a significant growth opportunity for the UK, supporting the country's energy transition, generating massive long-term economic value, and creating thousands of highly skilled jobs built on the site's proud industrial heritage," said Prashant Ruia, Chairman of Essar Energy Transition.
Essar has committed significant clean energy investment to upgrade refining processes and integrate low-carbon fuels into its operations. These changes will allow the refinery to remain competitive while supporting the UK’s climate targets.

Energy transition plans include large-scale hydrogen production to replace traditional fuels. Essar is building hydrogen-ready infrastructure to supply low carbon fuels for industrial use. The company aims to produce blue hydrogen initially, with a gradual shift toward green hydrogen as renewable capacity expands.
Decarbonization projects will also include sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and other advanced fuels. These low-carbon fuels will reduce emissions in hard-to-abate sectors such as aviation and heavy industry.
Essar’s clean energy investment will play a critical role in strengthening the UK’s industrial ecosystem. The company plans to create thousands of jobs through construction and long-term operations linked to energy transition projects.
The investment will also support supply chains, logistics, and infrastructure development around Stanlow. Energy transition initiatives will enhance energy security while reducing reliance on high-emission fuel sources.
Essar’s net zero strategy relies on sustained capital expenditure and execution of decarbonization projects. The USD 5–8 billion commitment represents one of the largest clean energy investments by an Indian-origin group in the UK.
Energy transition remains a long-term priority for Essar, with clear milestones for emission reduction and operational transformation. The company continues to align its global strategy with climate goals while scaling low-carbon fuels production and expanding clean energy investment across key markets.
