Maruti Suzuki green logistics push is gathering momentum as the country’s largest carmaker has earmarked ₹1,372 crore investment to strengthen sustainable transport operations.
The company has also crossed the milestone of 30 lakh vehicle dispatches via rail, reinforcing its focus on sustainable mobility.
The company’s growing focus on rail-based vehicle dispatches reflects its long-term strategy to reduce carbon emissions, cut fuel consumption, and ease pressure on road networks as vehicle demand continues to rise.
Maruti Suzuki said it aims to increase the share of rail logistics in India to 35 percent of its total outbound logistics by FY2030-31, compared to 26.5 percent at present. The move is part of the automaker’s larger sustainability plan, which focuses on reducing its environmental footprint while improving efficiency in vehicle transportation.
The ₹1,372 crore investment will go toward expanding dedicated green logistics infrastructure. This includes building in-plant railway sidings at manufacturing facilities in Hansalpur and Manesar, strengthening rail infrastructure at logistics hubs, and adding specialised automobile rakes to support smoother vehicle movement across the country.

The company recently crossed a major achievement by transporting more than 30 lakh vehicles through railways. According to Maruti Suzuki, vehicle transportation by rail has grown significantly over the past decade, increasing nearly nine times since 2014. What was once a small part of its transport operations now contributes more than a quarter of total vehicle dispatches.
Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said the company remains committed to expanding sustainable transport solutions. He noted that Maruti Suzuki plans to develop another in-plant railway siding at its upcoming Kharkhoda facility in Haryana, which will further support its green mobility goals.
The shift toward rail transport has accelerated in recent years. The share of railway dispatches rose from around 5 percent in FY2014-15 to 26.5 percent in FY2025-26. Notably, the jump from 20 lakh to 30 lakh cumulative vehicle dispatches was achieved in just 21 months, marking the company’s fastest growth phase in rail logistics.
Maruti Suzuki currently operates railway sidings at its Gujarat and Haryana plants, becoming the first passenger vehicle manufacturer in India to establish such infrastructure at two production sites. Together, these facilities can dispatch up to 7.5 lakh vehicles annually to more than 600 cities using a hub-and-spoke logistics network.
Industry experts believe Maruti Suzuki’s increasing investment in eco-friendly vehicle transport aligns with India’s broader focus on greener and more efficient transportation systems. With fuel costs and environmental concerns becoming key priorities, the company’s strategy could help reduce emissions while improving supply chain efficiency in the years ahead.
