Toyota’s Maharashtra plant by 2029 marks a major expansion for the Japanese automaker in India, as the company plans to set up a new vehicle manufacturing plant in the state.
The move aims to meet rising demand and strengthen Toyota’s long-term presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing automobile markets. The new plant, expected to begin operations in 2029, highlights Toyota’s growing confidence in India while giving a boost to the Indian automotive sector.
The upcoming facility will come up in the Bidkin Industrial Area in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, formerly Aurangabad, and will become Toyota’s third manufacturing plant in India. According to company plans, the factory is expected to start production in the first half of 2029 with an annual production capacity of around 100,000 vehicles annually.
The move signals Toyota’s long-term commitment to India, where demand for passenger vehicles—especially SUV manufacturing in India—has continued to grow rapidly. Through its Indian subsidiary, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, the company said the new facility will help it respond more quickly to future demand while strengthening supply capabilities for both domestic and export markets.

Toyota is expected to manufacture a new sport utility vehicle (SUV) at the Maharashtra plant, reflecting changing customer preferences in India where SUVs continue to dominate sales. The facility will house complete vehicle manufacturing operations, including stamping, welding, painting, and final assembly, making it a fully integrated production unit.
The new investment is also expected to create jobs and support local economic growth. Toyota has said the plant could generate nearly 2,800 jobs in Maharashtra once operations begin, offering a significant boost to the region’s industrial development. While reports suggest the investment may be worth nearly ₹20,000 crore investment, the company has not officially confirmed the figure.
In its statement, Toyota said the new manufacturing plant is part of its strategy to build a more flexible production system capable of adapting to future market demand and changing customer needs. The company added that expanding production capacity would improve delivery efficiency and reinforce its commitment to Indian customers.
Toyota currently operates two manufacturing plants in Bidadi near Bengaluru, Karnataka. The first facility, operational since 1999, produces popular models such as the Innova HyCross, Innova Crysta, Fortuner, and Legender. The second plant, which began operations in 2010, manufactures vehicles including the Camry Hybrid, Urban Cruiser Hyryder, and Hilux. Together, Toyota’s total vehicle production capacity in India stands at around 342,000 vehicles annually.
The expansion comes at a time when global carmakers are increasingly focusing on India as both a large consumer market and an export base. Rising vehicle demand, government support for manufacturing, and changing consumer preferences are pushing companies to expand operations across the country, strengthening automobile manufacturing in Maharashtra.
Industry experts believe Toyota expansion in India could strengthen the company’s position in the competitive SUV segment while helping it scale production faster in the coming years. For Maharashtra, the project represents another major industrial investment that could support economic growth, job creation, and the state’s ambitions to become a stronger India auto manufacturing hub.
