The space industry is entering another important phase in India as Finnish satellite company ICEYE formally establishes its Indian entity in New Delhi.
The move brings advanced Earth observation and sovereign intelligence capabilities closer to Indian defense and intelligence customers while creating a pathway for local satellite manufacturing.
ICEYE plans to build production capabilities in India using local suppliers, sourcing and engineering talent. The company will also explore partnerships across India’s growing space and defense ecosystem.
This expansion gives India’s private space industry another global technology player and could strengthen domestic capabilities in satellite production, surveillance, environmental monitoring and space-based intelligence.
ICEYE’s India entry expands the company’s presence in one of the world’s major defense and space industry markets. The New Delhi entity will initially focus on supporting Indian defense and intelligence customers with advanced intelligence capabilities and solutions.
The company will also engage with India’s broader space and defense ecosystem through supply chain participation, technology validation and local capability development. This approach gives ICEYE a direct operating base in India while creating opportunities for domestic companies to participate in its expansion.
ICEYE operates the world’s largest synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite constellation. Its SAR technology enables Earth observation in different weather conditions and during both day and night. The technology has applications across defense, surveillance, and environmental monitoring.

The biggest development for India’s space industry extends beyond ICEYE’s defense ambitions. The company plans to establish production capabilities within India and use local sourcing, Indian suppliers, and local engineering talent.
ICEYE CEO and co-founder Rafal Modrzewski said the Indian entity would create “real engineering and manufacturing capability on the ground” and that the company wants to build this capability with the government and local partners.
ICEYE is also exploring collaboration across launch capabilities, electronics and component manufacturing, and technology partnerships. These areas could connect the company with multiple layers of India’s private space ecosystem.
The company had previously indicated that its planned Indian production facility could serve as an Asia-Pacific manufacturing hub. Earlier reports said ICEYE aimed to manufacture 10 satellites in its first year and scale production over time.
ICEYE’s expansion arrives as India continues to deepen private participation in the space industry. The company’s local manufacturing approach could create opportunities for Indian suppliers involved in electronics, components, engineering and satellite-related technologies.
The regulatory environment also supports greater private participation. India permits up to 74 per cent foreign direct investment through the automatic route in satellite manufacturing and operation, while components and subsystems allow up to 100 per cent automatic FDI.
ICEYE’s India strategy therefore connects three priorities: defense intelligence, domestic manufacturing and private-sector participation. The company’s planned local production can strengthen the industrial depth of India’s space industry while giving Indian firms opportunities to participate in a global satellite supply chain.
For India’s private space industry, ICEYE’s entry represents more than another international company establishing an Indian presence. It adds another potential bridge between global space technology and domestic manufacturing capability.
