Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL) has enhanced Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) vehicles with specialized military-grade upgrades, Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran said, highlighting growing synergies within the Tata Group’s diversified portfolio.
The upgrades include integration of navigation aids, optronics, and armoring solutions, enabling JLR’s Defender vehicles to be adapted for a range of defense and tactical applications. The development reflects how the group is leveraging cross-company capabilities to expand into high-value defense mobility solutions.
Chandrasekaran emphasized that TASL’s land mobility division has significantly expanded its international footprint. Over the past three years, the company has supplied more than 4,000 multi-axle high-mobility platforms to global defense forces, including the Royal Moroccan Army and the Armenian Armed Forces.
The collaboration between TASL and JLR serves as a key example of how automotive engineering and defense technology are being combined to create versatile, mission-ready platforms for global markets.
During his visit, Chandrasekaran reviewed TASL’s upcoming Defense MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) facility near Bengaluru airport. The facility, expected to be operational by December, will be India’s first private-sector defense MRO hub in the region.
Spread across 15,000 square meters, the site will focus on heavy maintenance and avionics upgrades for Lockheed Martin C-130J transport aircraft, strengthening India’s domestic aerospace servicing capabilities.

TASL also showcased its indigenously developed loitering munitions platform, featuring extended operational ranges from 50 kilometers to several hundred kilometres along with higher payload capacities.
Additionally, the Advanced Armored Platform developed in collaboration with DRDO was presented. The system includes a 30 mm crewless turret designed in-house, reinforcing India’s push towards self-reliance in defense manufacturing.
Chandrasekaran further reviewed the company’s UAV programs and defense manufacturing capabilities across facilities, including the Vemagal site in Karnataka, which houses the final assembly line for Airbus H125 helicopters and key artillery and weapon system integration units.
The integration of automotive platforms like JLR with defense technologies signals a broader shift in India’s defense manufacturing landscape towards dual-use innovation, indigenization, and export competitiveness.
TASL’s expanding capabilities across land, air, and unmanned systems position it as a key private-sector player supporting India’s long-term defense and aerospace ambitions.
Tata Advanced Systems’ upgrades to Jaguar Land Rover vehicles highlight the Tata Group’s ability to create cross-sector synergies while strengthening India’s defense manufacturing ecosystem. The move underscores a growing focus on indigenous capability, global exports, and advanced military technologies.
