Tata Motors' renewable energy push has received another major boost after the automaker partnered with Welspun Renewable Energy to develop an 86 MW wind-solar hybrid project.
The project is expected to supply clean electricity to four of the company's manufacturing plants, helping reduce dependence on conventional power sources. With this latest move, Tata Motors' renewable energy push strengthens its long-term sustainability goals while supporting its commitment to increase the use of renewable energy across its operations.
The companies have signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) under which the hybrid project will generate nearly 200 million units of clean electricity every year. The power produced will be supplied to Tata Motors' manufacturing facilities located in Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Karnataka.
The new 86 MW wind-solar hybrid project combines wind and solar power generation to ensure a more reliable supply of renewable electricity throughout the year. Hybrid projects help improve power availability by balancing seasonal changes in wind and sunlight while making better use of existing infrastructure.
According to the company, the project is expected to reduce more than 1.4 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. This marks another important step in Tata Motors' efforts to lower its environmental impact and move closer to its net zero ambitions.
The initiative also supports the company's RE100 commitment, under which businesses pledge to source 100 percent of their electricity from renewable energy.
"This project reflects Tata Motors' continued focus on building greener and more energy-efficient manufacturing operations. The scale and integrated nature of this wind-solar hybrid solution will help us secure a reliable supply of renewable energy for key commercial vehicle manufacturing facilities, while meaningfully reducing carbon emissions across operations on a sustained basis," said Tata Motors Vice President -Operations- Vishal Badshah.

The collaboration with Welspun Renewable Energy reflects the growing focus of Indian manufacturers on sustainable operations. As electricity remains one of the largest contributors to industrial carbon emissions, switching to clean energy helps companies reduce both operational costs and environmental impact over the long term.
The renewable power generated through the project will support manufacturing activities at four Tata Motors plants without compromising production requirements. The agreement also highlights the increasing role of private-sector partnerships in accelerating India's clean energy transition.
Welspun Renewable Energy Pvt Ltd MD & CEO Kapil Maheshwari said the partnership with Tata Motors represents a defining milestone in Welspun New Energy's journey.
"We are not merely signing a PPA, we are co-creating a model for how India's largest manufacturers can decarbonise and achieve net zero and sustainability goals," Maheshwari added.
Indian automakers are steadily increasing investments in green manufacturing as sustainability becomes a key business priority. Renewable energy projects not only help companies meet climate targets but also improve energy security and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
For Tata Motors, the latest partnership adds another milestone to its broader environmental strategy. By increasing the share of clean energy in its manufacturing operations, the company aims to build a more sustainable production ecosystem while contributing to India's renewable energy goals.
