ABB has secured a big tender to supply the Mumbai Metro expansion with propulsion systems and software to enhance the urge of urban transport in India.
The contract that is being presented is the integrated traction and control solution at the 40 six-car trainsets to the Lines 5 and 6 of the Mumbai Metro network that were awarded by Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd.
According to the agreement, ABB will supply 22 six-car trains on Line 5 (also called Orange Line) of Thane to Kalyan via Bhiwandi and 18 six-car trains on Line 6 (also called Pink Line) of Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli. These parts will enhance reliability, energy efficiency and the life cycle performance to the metro system.

This project will be manufactured in India, traction converters will be produced in Bengaluru and traction motors in Vadodara, and engineering, testing and service teams will be located locally. Both companies have not revealed financial information of the order.
“This order marks ABB’s entry into the 25 kV AC metro segment in India, a significant milestone that expands our technology presence in the metro rail sector,” said Roger Buchmann, Global Business Line Head – Rail Systems at ABB, underlining the importance of this contract.
The award stresses that ABB is a major partner in the Indian market of metro rails and is solidifying its further cooperation with Titagarh, with which it started collaborating in 2023 in a series of strategic alliances on metro projects.
All in all, the traction order provides the initiatives of the city of Mumbai to improve the infrastructure of the public transport system, minimize congestion, and connect the daily commuters to the city by expanding the metro network.
