Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) will start the second wave of area development of the Vizhinjam seaport, which will cost about Rs 16,000 crore.
It will also be announced during the first ceremony that will take place on Saturday, when Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will open the project.
The second stage will make Vizhinjam to become the largest transshipment center in the Indian subcontinent. This growth will contribute 4.1 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) to the existing capacity of the port, making it one of the most advanced and fully automated transshipment stations in India.

Phase 2 will also come in the form of 21 automated ship-to-shore cranes, 45 automated Cantilever Rail-Mounted Gantry cranes and a rail handling yard. State-of-the-art electrical systems and automation will also be a part of the development. Some of the major infrastructure improvements will include expansion of berths, dredging, and reclamation that will improve capacity. The construction will be sustainable as well and eco-friendly features such as electric vehicle charging will be considered. The phase will involve setting up essential facilities like an electrical substation, a sewage treatment plant, and improved security, which will have ISPS fencing. The project will not just empower the maritime infrastructure of India, but also make Vizhinjam one of the leading transshipment hubs globally.
