Defense manufacturing in India is expanding across specialized technology segments, with the Ministry of Defense signing contracts worth Rs 4,106 crore for an Indian Air Force communication satellite and heavyweight torpedoes for the Indian Navy.
The agreements involve Bengaluru-based NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) and Hyderabad-based Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL).
While the Rs 2,563 crore GSAT-7C contract targets secure, dedicated military communications, the Rs 1,543 crore Varunastra procurement supports the Navy's anti-submarine warfare capabilities.
Together, the agreements highlight how domestic public-sector enterprises are contributing to different parts of India's defense technology ecosystem, from space-based infrastructure to specialized naval weapons.
They also reinforce the government's focus on developing critical military capabilities through indigenous design, development and manufacturing.
The Ministry of Defense awarded the GSAT-7C contract to NSIL, the commercial arm of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). The domestically built satellite is meant to secure and strengthen the communication links across the Indian Air Force assets.
The new satellite is expected to improve the reliability of the IAF's communications infrastructure, although the ministry's announcement does not specify a launch date or operational deployment timeline.
NSIL's involvement connects the country's established space capabilities with military requirements, demonstrating how specialized government enterprises can support strategic technology procurement.
The agreement follows the government's wider efforts to strengthen indigenous space-based military infrastructure.

The second agreement covers Varunastra heavyweight torpedoes for the Indian Navy, with BDL receiving the Rs 1,543 crore contract.
Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organization’s Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL), Varunastra is an indigenous, ship-launched anti-submarine torpedo.
According to the Ministry of Defense, the weapon features advanced maneuvering capabilities and can engage enemy submarines at long ranges. Its procurement is intended to strengthen the Navy's underwater warfare capabilities.
For India's defense manufacturing sector, the contract links indigenous weapon development with production through a domestic public-sector enterprise.
The combined value of the agreements is Rs 4,106 crore, divided between satellite communications and underwater weapons.
