Solar manufacturing in India could gain an upstream boost as Jakson Group plans to invest Rs 6,863 crore in an integrated facility in Andhra Pradesh's Kurnool district.
The proposed plant at Meedivemula village will produce 10 GW of silicon ingots and wafers and 5 GW of solar cells annually, with around 2,000 jobs expected.
Planned across three phases, the first phase is targeted to begin commercial production in May 2028, with the remaining capacity scheduled by 2030.
Beyond the investment, the project highlights Andhra Pradesh's ambitions to expand its solar manufacturing base and strengthen India's domestic solar supply chain.
The proposed investment will extend Jakson Group's manufacturing operations beyond solar modules into the upstream stages of production. The company already operates a 1.2 GW module manufacturing facility in Greater Noida.
Silicon ingots are processed into thin wafers, which are then used to manufacture solar cells. These cells form the core electricity-generating component of solar modules.
Expanding domestic production at these stages could give Indian manufacturers additional sourcing options and reduce exposure to imported components.
The proposed facility could help deepen the domestic supply chain as demand for solar equipment grows, although actual benefits will depend on commissioning schedules, production costs and market demand.

The State Investment Promotion Board has recommended allocating 290 acres to Jakson Integrated Solar for the facility, according to the reported announcement.
The planned employment of around 2,000 people could also support local economic activity as the project progresses. Andhra Pradesh's Integrated Clean Energy Policy, 2024, targets solar manufacturing capacity across the value chain.
Reported state investment promotion documents indicate that approved projects, excluding Jakson's proposal, already account for substantial planned capacity in solar cells, modules, ingots and wafers.
The Jakson Group’s solar manufacturing plant in Andhra Pradesh could therefore complement the state's wider manufacturing ecosystem. Its development may create opportunities for industrial services, equipment suppliers and other supporting businesses.
The investment highlights the growing importance of solar wafer manufacturing in India as manufacturers seek to strengthen domestic sourcing across the production chain.
For Andhra Pradesh, attracting projects such as the proposed Kurnool solar plant could reinforce its position as a destination for large-scale clean-energy manufacturing.
The project also adds to the state's efforts to build solar cell manufacturing capacity alongside upstream component production. For manufacturers, the central question is whether investments in ingots, wafers and cells can translate into reliable, competitively priced domestic inputs.
If completed as planned, Jakson's investment could become an important addition to Kurnool's industrial landscape while supporting the development of India's broader solar manufacturing supply chain.
