Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Ltd (SDHI) has won a major shipbuilding contract worth over ₹2,600 crore, marking a significant milestone for India’s maritime sector. The order is the country’s first for ammonia dual-fuel bulk carriers, highlighting a shift toward cleaner and more sustainable shipping solutions.
The contract, signed with Energy ONE Limited, involves the construction of four bulk carriers, each with a capacity of 92,500 deadweight tonnage (DWT). These vessels will use ammonia as an alternative fuel, helping reduce carbon emissions and supporting global efforts to make shipping more environmentally friendly.
Each ship will measure around 229.5 metres in length and 37 metres in width, making them among the largest vessels ever built in an Indian shipyard. The design comes from South Korea-based KMS-EMEC, while classification and certification will be handled by global maritime body Det Norske Veritas (DNV). This collaboration reflects the use of advanced shipbuilding technology and adherence to global standards.
The deal falls under a high-value contract category and strengthens SDHI’s growing order book. The first vessel is expected to be delivered by October 2029, with the remaining ships scheduled for delivery at regular four-month intervals.

Industry experts see this project as an important step toward maritime decarbonisation. Ammonia is emerging as a promising zero-carbon fuel, and its use in large commercial vessels could significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the coming years.
The order also highlights increasing global confidence in Indian shipyards. SDHI’s Pipavav facility in Gujarat, known for its large dry dock capacity, will play a key role in executing the project. The company has been steadily rebuilding its presence in the industry, and this contract further strengthens its position in India shipbuilding industry.
Overall, the deal supports India’s long-term goal of becoming a leading shipbuilding nation. With growing focus on green shipping solutions and innovation, such projects are expected to drive future growth in the sector.
