On May 26, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Dahod Locomotive Manufacturing Workshop in Gujarat, a significant milestone for Indian Railways and the 'Make in India' initiative. The state-of-the-art facility, built in just three years since its foundation stone was laid in 2022, was constructed at a cost of Rs 21,405 crore under a public-private partnership model. The workshop, designed to produce 120 high-powered 9,000 HP electric locomotives annually with scalability to 150, will enhance India’s rail freight capacity and support exports.
Modi kicked things off by unveiling the first locomotive, crafted by Siemens, which can haul a whopping 4,600 tonnes. It’s loaded with neat features like energy-saving regenerative braking, high-tech Kavach safety systems, and comfy air-conditioned cabins with toilets for drivers. The factory plans to Build 1,200 locomotives over 10 years, creating 10,000 jobs and lifting Dahod’s tribal community.
