India’s energy lockdown rumours were firmly dismissed by Hardeep Singh Puri, who clarified that there is “no proposal under consideration by the Government of India.”
The statement comes as speculation spread over a possible shutdown due to the ongoing West Asia conflict and concerns about fuel supply disruptions.
Addressing the situation, Puri called such claims “irresponsible and harmful,” warning that spreading panic during a sensitive global crisis can mislead the public. He emphasized that authorities are closely tracking developments in global energy markets, supply chains, and essential commodities in real time. According to him, India remains prepared and resilient in handling external shocks.

Reinforcing the government’s stance, Nirmala Sitharaman also rejected the energy lockdown rumours, stating clearly that no restrictions similar to the COVID-19 period are being considered. “I want to reassure people that there shall not be any lockdown… These are baseless,” she said, expressing concern over misleading claims made by some public figures.
The government has assured citizens that fuel availability in India remains stable. Puri noted that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure uninterrupted access to fuel, energy, and other critical supplies. He added that India is ready to respond quickly and in a coordinated way if the global situation worsens.
The remarks come amid rising tensions linked to the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran and the reported blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil route. To cushion the impact of rising crude oil prices, the government has pushed excise duty cuts on petrol and diesel, aiming to protect consumers from price shocks.
