E20 Petrol is now the standard fuel across India starting April 1, 2025, as the government pushes cleaner and more sustainable mobility. With E20 Petrol now available at pumps nationwide, fuel will contain up to 20 percent ethanol blended with petrol, following a directive from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
The rollout applies to all states and Union Territories. Oil marketing companies have been asked to ensure the blended fuel meets Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) norms, maintaining consistent quality across the country.
So, what does this mean for you? E20 Petrol is a mix of petrol and ethanol, a biofuel made from crops like sugarcane and maize. It burns cleaner and offers a higher octane rating of at least 95 RON, compared to regular petrol’s 91–92 RON. This helps engines achieve smoother combustion and, in some cases, better performance.

Most new cars sold in India today are already compatible with E20 fuel. Automakers have updated engine systems to handle higher ethanol blends without affecting reliability. If you own an older vehicle, you can still use E20 Petrol, though you may notice a slight drop in fuel efficiency.
The bigger goal behind the E20 Petrol rollout in India is to reduce dependence on imported crude oil. By increasing the use of locally produced ethanol, the government aims to cut fuel import bills and boost energy security.
