Without a single question, it is already clear that the Indian auto sector is growing humongously. But what is really changing in India’s car market is the number of people buying cars, or the kind of cars they want to own? Surprisingly, the answer leads to the second one. India’s passenger vehicle market approximately crossed 46 lakh units in FY2025-26, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). But the more important story is where that demand is heading fastly.
Utility vehicles now account for about 68% of passenger vehicle sales, showing how strongly SUVs and related body styles have moved into the mainstream. This does not mean hatchbacks, sedans or entry-level cars have disappeared. Rather, Indian buyers are becoming more choosier in their choices about the car they are looking for — space, road presence, features, comfort and versatility are really influencing the decision.
That is why the India SUV market growth in 2026 needs to be viewed alongside the revival of smaller cars. For instance, Maruti Suzuki Company has said it expects the small-car market to grow faster in the coming years. Its FY2025-26 results also showed nearly 1.3 lakh pending small-car orders at year-end, pointing to the rising demand rather than the disappearance of the segment.
The implication for the India passenger vehicle market outlook 2026 is clearly noticeable: the market is expanding, but not evenly across categories. The next phase of growth will be shaped by how manufacturers balance affordability with premiumisation and how quickly consumers accept new powertrain technologies.
