India’s auto boom no longer belongs only to its biggest cities. The mobility market is broadening across metropolitan and district India, vehicle categories, powertrains and income groups.
Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy said the mobility story now extends across two wheelers and tractors, petrol, diesel, CNG and electric vehicles, as well as different regions and income groups.
The shift in India’s auto market also reflects the industry’s broader ambition to expand beyond domestic demand and strengthen its global position. SIAM President Shailesh Chandra said the next phase must focus on turning resilience into global competitiveness, technology leadership, scale and global leadership.
He also called for India to move towards designing, developing, manufacturing and exporting from the country. This push could help India strengthen its automotive ecosystem while positioning the country as a leading global automotive manufacturing and mobility hub.
The growth of India’s automobile market is also strengthening the network that connects manufacturers with customers. Kumaraswamy highlighted the role of dealerships in taking manufacturing led growth deeper into smaller cities and districts.
India has around 15,000 dealerships and more than 30,000 outlets, supporting approximately 50 lakh livelihoods across the country. This gives the auto retail network a significant role in extending mobility and economic activity beyond major urban centers.
Vikrampati Singhania, Managing Director of JK Fenner (India), described dealers as the “human face of the automotive industry”. He said their presence across the country gives them an early understanding of changing customer aspirations. He also stressed that vehicle manufacturers, component suppliers and dealers need to strengthen the ecosystem together.
Government initiatives are adding further momentum to India’s automotive expansion, particularly as the industry moves towards electric mobility and higher domestic manufacturing capacity.
The PM E-DRIVE scheme, with an outlay of Rs 10,900 crore, has supported the sale of more than 26.5 lakh electric vehicles. The government’s PLI Scheme for Automobile and Auto Components, has attracted cumulative investment of more than Rs 44,000 crore and generated close to 68,000 jobs.
These initiatives, combined with expanding mobility across regions and income groups, are broadening the reach of India’s automotive ecosystem. The growing manufacturing base, dealership network and stronger domestic demand are reinforcing the sector’s expansion beyond the country’s largest urban centers.
