India has taken another step forward in boosting its defence manufacturing and maritime strength, as Titagarh Naval Systems received approval to expand its shipyard in West Bengal. The development is expected to improve the country’s shipbuilding capacity and support its goal of becoming more self-reliant in defence manufacturing.
The project will see an investment of around ₹550 crore and will involve building a modern shipyard expansion facility spread across nearly 50 acres. The expansion will include key infrastructure such as a dry dock, slipway, and advanced fabrication units. These additions will allow the company to build larger and more complex vessels more efficiently.
Officials say the upgraded facility will significantly increase production capacity. It will enable the construction of medium-sized tankers and specialised vessels for both defence and commercial use. The addition of a dry dock is especially important, as it helps in faster assembly, repair, and maintenance of ships.

Titagarh Naval Systems, part of Titagarh Rail Systems, has been steadily growing its presence in the Indian shipbuilding industry. While the company is well known for its railway manufacturing business, it has been expanding into defence and maritime projects in recent years. It has already delivered vessels for the Indian Navy, showing its capability in this space.
The expansion also aligns with the government’s efforts to promote domestic shipbuilding through schemes that provide financial incentives and subsidies. These initiatives are aimed at reducing dependence on imports and encouraging private players to invest in the sector.
Experts believe the project will create job opportunities and support local industries in West Bengal. The region, especially around Kolkata, is becoming an important hub for shipbuilding due to its strategic location and access to waterways.
With global demand for specialised ships increasing, this expansion puts Titagarh in a strong position to serve both domestic and international markets. Overall, the move highlights India’s growing focus on strengthening its maritime infrastructure and advancing its Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
