Tata Advanced Systems has embarked on a project of constructing a new Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) in Bengaluru.
The project is one of the bids by the company to win the contract on the Indian Air Force (IAF) Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA).
The IAF C-130J Super Hercules fleet will be supported by the centre and will also offer heavy maintenance, component overhaul, structural repair, avionics upgrades, and training to the Indian engineers.
The initiative is a strategic attempt to localize support and maintenance of military transport aircraft. This is one of its main benefits because the IAF is aimed at substituting old platforms, including AN-32. The MRO center will broaden the Tata aerospace presence, following its position as the world provider of C-130 empennages and aerostructures.

It is planned to have the new facility completed by the end of 2026 and first C-130 J is likely to be maintained in early 2027. According to the company officials, the project is crucial to boosting the aerospace ecosystem in India to enable the formation of a basis of innovation, skills, and the ability to compete on a long term basis in the global market.
As a result of the MRO, Tata is a legitimate supplier of the IAF with its intended acquisition of 80 medium transport aircraft. With Tata having a competitive advantage in terms of being ready, cost-effective and long-term fleet support, a local service and sustainment hub makes it competitive in the global marketplace as manufacturers compete to win the deal.
