Skoda Auto Volkswagen India has strengthened its engineering footprint with the launch of a new R&D facility in Pune, marking a major step in its India growth strategy.
Announced today, the new center spans around 33,000 square feet and is designed to expand the company’s research and development capabilities while supporting future-ready mobility solutions.
Located in Baner, the facility will house more than 250 engineers, taking the total R&D workforce in Pune to over 450. With this expansion, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India aims to accelerate product development cycles and deepen its focus on localized engineering tailored to Indian and global markets.
The new R&D hub will focus on key areas such as vehicle development, platform engineering, software integration, and emerging technologies linked to sustainable mobility. This aligns with the company’s broader push toward electrification and digital innovation, both critical for its future portfolio.

"With the new Baner wing, we are creating additional capacity in a dynamic urban location while building on the strong foundation of our Technology Centre Pune in Chakan. As part of its long-term roadmap, TCP is set to expand its competencies in digitalisation, automation, and advanced safety technologies," said Piyush Arora, Managing Director and CEO, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited.
Company officials highlighted that the expansion reinforces India’s growing role within the Volkswagen Group’s global operations. The Pune facility is expected to contribute not only to domestic projects but also to international programs, positioning India as an important engineering and development base.
The move builds on the group’s existing presence in Pune, which already includes manufacturing and technical centers. By adding this new R&D wing, the company is looking to create a more integrated ecosystem where design, development, and production work closely together.
This development also reflects the group’s long-term commitment to the “make in India, for India and the world” approach. As competition in the Indian auto market intensifies, the new facility is expected to help deliver faster innovation, improve efficiency, and support the rollout of future models, including those in the electric vehicle segment.
