India is entering a new phase of nuclear expansion as it seeks cleaner and more reliable electricity for its growing economy.
The Nuclear power industry is gaining momentum through new projects, private investment and stronger fuel supplies. India is targeting 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047, creating opportunities across the energy value chain.
Recent developments show that this expansion is no longer limited to government-led projects. Private companies are preparing to enter the sector, while equipment makers are securing nuclear orders. At the same time, India is working with global partners to secure uranium supplies for future reactors.
India’s nuclear plans are moving forward on several fronts, from reactor construction and uranium supplies to private-sector participation. The government currently operates 24 nuclear reactors with 8.78 GW of installed capacity.
Nine more reactors with a combined capacity of 7.5 GW are under construction. Recent developments also point to wider participation from companies such as Tata Consulting Engineers and Transformers and Rectifiers India.
India is also strengthening uranium supplies through agreements with countries including Uzbekistan and Australia. Together, these moves could support the country’s long-term nuclear expansion plans.
Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE) believes private companies should take a larger role in India’s nuclear power development. Amit Sharma, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Tata Consulting Engineers, said the Department of Atomic Energy should focus on strategic priorities. He compared the approach with the space sector, where private companies have gained greater opportunities through cooperation with ISRO. TCE has already worked with groups including JSW, Reliance Industries and the Bajaj Group on nuclear project studies. The company expects nuclear energy to contribute 5-6 percent of its revenue by FY30.

India is also focusing on securing enough uranium to support its expanding nuclear program. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a long-term uranium supply arrangement with Uzbekistan during his visit to the country. India has also secured a long-term uranium supply agreement with Australia earlier this year. These agreements are important because India will need dependable fuel supplies as more reactors become operational. The moves also show India’s effort to diversify its nuclear fuel sources and reduce supply risks.
Transformers and Rectifiers (India) Limited (TARIL) has entered the nuclear power sector with its first major order. The company received an order through Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited for generator transformers. The equipment will support Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited’s Kaiga Units 5 and 6 in Karnataka. The two units are expected to add 1,400 MW of nuclear generation capacity. Satyen Mamtora, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, TARIL, said stronger domestic capabilities will support India’s long-term energy goals.
India currently has nine nuclear reactors under construction with a combined capacity of 7.5 GW. The country operates 24 reactors with total installed capacity of 8.78 GW. The government has also approved 10 indigenous reactors for development in phases. These projects are part of India’s broader target of reaching 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047. Nuclear power is expected to provide steady electricity while supporting India’s clean energy and energy security goals.
