The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) is considering setting up a micro LED display fabrication factory in India as its main aim would be to back domestic semiconductor and advanced display manufacturing under the Semicon India program. The project is in line with the government’s policy of creating local production of high-tech products with the aim of lowering imports.
Micro LED technology presents a number of advantages which include higher contrast and wider color gamut and thinner profile and lower power consumption as compared to traditional LCD or OLED displays. For this reason, it is also used in premium devices and fast-growing sectors such as wearables, AR/VR, and automotive displays.
The point of view of MeitY is based on the technology of micro LED due to its capability to skip over all other display technologies and establish a technology base for the future. Presently, negotiations are going on to allow micro LED manufacturing to be done in conjunction with LCD, OLED, and AMOLED plants where the incentives along with the policy framework will assist the investors whether they are global or domestic. Till now, large-scale projects have mainly focused on LCD and OLED due to scalability and demand but micro LED is still considered a strategic long-term priority.

The government would reassign any leftover money from the India Semiconductor Mission to this project and join forces with technology partners to provide cutting-edge infrastructure and a trained workforce for the micro LED fab. The aim of this project is to support India’s digital electronics and AI ecosystem and position the country not only as a mass producer but also as a global innovator in advanced display technologies.
