According to a report by the Economic Times on Tuesday, American automotive leader Ford is expected to restart production and export of engines and associated parts from its facility in Chennai. According to the report, the firm is expected to announce details about the Tamil Nadu facility in Q2.
The ET report also mentioned that Ford is in the midst of repurposing the Chennai factory with a focus on exports. Up to this point, Ford has not released any statement concerning the update about the Chennai plant. The advancement occurs three years after Ford left India in 2022. The production of vehicles had stopped in 2021.
The facility situated in Maraimalai Nagar near the Tamil Nadu capital has been inactive since 2022. Although there was some excitement about restarting operations at the plant, many believed that the new tariff policy introduced by US President Donald Trump could alter the situation. However, the ET report indicated that the plan remains active and the export-exclusive production activities will restart at the facility shortly.
The ET report mentioned that the automotive giant was considering various EV initiatives in India as well. However, the aspirations for electric vehicles remain distant from reality as the company is currently concentrating on exports.
It is important to mention that Ford has already shut down all dealerships in India while keeping the service centers functional.
