Tata vs Foxconn is no longer just a competition between two manufacturers. It has become a race that could shape Apple's India iPhone business for years to come.
The big question now is can Tata overtake Foxconn to become Apple's largest manufacturing partner in India. Backed by strategic acquisitions, rising exports, and major investments, Tata Electronics has emerged as Foxconn's strongest challenger as Apple continues to expand its production outside China.
India has become a key part of Apple's global supply chain, with one in every four iPhones now being made in the country. As production grows, the rivalry between Tata and Foxconn is becoming one of the biggest stories in India's electronics manufacturing sector.
Tata Electronics entered Apple's supply chain through the acquisition of Wistron's India business in 2023. It later strengthened its position by acquiring a majority stake in Pegatron India, allowing it to expand production much faster than building new facilities from scratch.
According to the report, Tata exported iPhones worth USD 26.3 billion during the FY22–FY26 Production Linked Incentive (PLI) period, narrowly ahead of Foxconn's USD 25.6 billion in exports.
The growing competition can be seen in the numbers.

While Foxconn still produces nearly 54 percent of all iPhones made in India, Tata has rapidly narrowed the gap by expanding both its manufacturing capacity and workforce.

Apple has been working to reduce its dependence on China by strengthening its manufacturing base in India. This strategy has benefited both Foxconn and Tata, but it has also created healthy competition between the two companies.
Some of the key factors driving Tata's growth include:
Beyond smartphones, Tata is also making a major push into semiconductor investment. The company plans to invest around ₹1.18 lakh crore in semiconductor fabrication and chip packaging facilities, positioning itself as a long-term player in India's electronics ecosystem.
Foxconn, however, remains a global manufacturing giant. Besides iPhones, it continues to expand production of AirPods and servers while also pursuing chip packaging projects in India.
The Tata-Foxconn rivalry is doing more than increasing iPhone production. It is creating jobs, attracting investment, and strengthening India's position as a global electronics manufacturing hub.
As competition intensifies, India stands to benefit through:
For Apple, having two strong manufacturing partners reduces supply chain risks while increasing production flexibility. For India, it signals growing confidence from one of the world's largest technology companies.
Whether Tata overtakes Foxconn in overall production remains uncertain. Foxconn still has decades of manufacturing expertise, larger global operations, and the biggest share of iPhone production in India. However, Tata's rapid expansion suggests the race is becoming much closer than it was just a few years ago.
Tata Electronics is part of the Tata Group and focuses on precision manufacturing, electronics, semiconductor fabrication, and assembly services. The company has quickly become one of Apple's key manufacturing partners in India following its acquisitions of Wistron India and Pegatron India, while also investing heavily in the country's semiconductor ecosystem.
