Airbus, the global aviation giant, is deepening its ties with India, now sourcing more than $1 billion in components each year from over 100 Indian suppliers, according to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. This milestone highlights India’s growing role in the global aerospace industry and its push to become a manufacturing hub.
Vaishnaw shared the news on social media after meeting Jürgen Westermeier, Managing Director of Airbus India. “It’s exciting to hear from Mr. Westermeier that Airbus is sourcing over $1 billion in components from more than 100 Indian suppliers,” he posted. He also mentioned Airbus’s plans to set up a Centre of Excellence for research and development at Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya in Vadodara, Gujarat, to tap into India’s talent pool.
According to industry sources, Airbus is targeting close to doubling of sourcing to $2 billion by 2030. It involves major deals with Mahindra Aerostructures to make main fuselages of H130 and H125 helicopters, which were signed in April and August 2025. The production is set to begin in 2027 and increase the experience of India in the manufacturing of precision aerospace.
The company already has a strong presence in India, employing more than 3,600 people including 1,500 IT professionals who help to promote the innovation. Its Bengaluru facility is the second largest digital centre of Airbus in the world after Toulouse, France. In 2023, Airbus collaborated with Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya to come up with training programs, faculty exchange, provide scholarships, and foster partnerships around the globe.
One of the key attractions is the C-295 military aircraft programme. In 2021, India signed an agreement to purchase 56 C-295 aircraft of which 40 would be assemble to a new Final Assembly Line at Vadodara operated by Tata Advanced Systems. This project was introduced in October 2024, and it is generating employment opportunities and introducing new technology to India.

The partnership was described by Vaishnaw as a game-changer since Airbus believed in the capabilities and infrastructure of India. The same sentiment was reiterated by Westernmeier who described a massive potential of innovation in India. With India proposing self-reliance with the help of the Atmanirbhar Bharat program, the investments of Airbus can only mean a positive future of the industry in India and aerospace, with analysts estimating that the industry will continue to grow and expand in the future to the rest of the world.
