Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) has signed a strategic agreement with Kalyani Strategic Systems Limited (KSSL) to jointly develop indigenous naval technologies, marking a fresh step in India’s push to strengthen domestic defense manufacturing.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed on March 5, 2026, focuses on building advanced maritime systems and unmanned platforms for both domestic and global markets.
The partnership brings together GRSE’s long-standing expertise in shipbuilding and maritime engineering with KSSL’s capabilities in advanced defense systems and platforms. By combining these strengths, the companies aim to develop new-generation naval technologies that can support the Indian Navy while also opening export opportunities in international defense markets.
Cmde PR Hari (Retd.), Chairman & Managing Director, GRSE said, “Collaborations like this will help accelerate the development of advanced indigenous maritime technologies and strengthen India’s shipbuilding ecosystem.”
The collaboration will focus on a wide range of systems that are critical for modern naval vessels. These include ship propulsion and mechanical systems designed for both naval and commercial ships. The companies will also work on integrated platform management systems, steering and stabilizer assemblies, and specialized deck equipment used in maritime operations.

Another key focus area is unmanned maritime platforms. Under the agreement, GRSE and KSSL will explore the development of advanced technologies such as Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs) and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs). These platforms are becoming increasingly important in naval missions, including surveillance, reconnaissance, mine countermeasures, and underwater monitoring.
Baba Kalyani, Chairman, Bharat Forge said, “India has the engineering capability to design and build advanced defense systems, and partnerships across the ecosystem will play a key role in strengthening the country’s defense manufacturing base.”
The agreement is expected to accelerate India’s efforts to develop indigenous naval technologies and reduce reliance on imported maritime systems. Defense manufacturing has become a central part of the country’s self-reliance strategy, with several programs encouraging local production of critical technologies. By jointly developing maritime solutions, the companies plan to strengthen domestic capabilities and support the broader Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative in the defense sector.
The MoU also opens the door for the companies to jointly identify and pursue opportunities in overseas markets. With global demand rising for advanced maritime defense systems and unmanned platforms, the partnership could help position Indian defense companies as competitive suppliers in international markets.
Jayant Patil, Senior Vice President & Head – Defence Business, Larsen & Toubro said, “India’s defence sector is moving toward deeper industry collaboration, where public and private players together can deliver complex platforms and technologies for the armed forces.”
By combining shipbuilding expertise with advanced defense technology capabilities, the partnership between GRSE and KSSL is expected to drive innovation in naval engineering. The agreement signals growing momentum in India’s defense industry as companies increasingly collaborate to build high-value indigenous naval technologies and strengthen the country’s maritime security capabilities.
