GAIL (India) Limited has entered into a GAIL RailTel partnership with RailTel Corporation of India to strengthen India’s telecom capabilities and expand the country’s digital infrastructure.
The two public sector companies signed a MoU on March 5, aiming to explore opportunities that combine their existing networks and infrastructure to support the growing demand for connectivity and digital services.
“This partnership is fully in sync with our vision to integrate energy and digital infrastructure, leveraging the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI), all of which are pivotal to India’s development journey,” Deepak Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director, GAIL.
Under the agreement, the companies will collaborate to build and enhance a nationwide telecom network by leveraging their respective assets. GAIL operates one of the largest natural gas pipeline networks in India, while RailTel manages an extensive optical fiber network laid along railway tracks across the country. By integrating these infrastructure corridors, the companies plan to improve network reach, efficiency, and reliability.

“Our collaboration with GAIL will enable both organisations to combine their strengths in network infrastructure and technological capabilities to accelerate the expansion of reliable digital connectivity across the country,” said Sanjai Kumar, Chairman and Managing Director, RailTel.
The GAIL RailTel partnership will focus on developing new telecom and digital infrastructure opportunities. Both organizations intend to explore projects that can strengthen connectivity for government initiatives, enterprises, and digital platforms. The collaboration also opens possibilities for deploying advanced technologies that require strong communication networks, including cloud services, data transmission, and AI-driven digital systems.
Officials from both companies believe the partnership will allow better use of existing infrastructure while reducing costs and time required to build new networks. RailTel’s fiber connectivity across thousands of railway stations and cities can complement GAIL’s pipeline routes, creating additional pathways for expanding telecom infrastructure.
