The Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative received a significant boost as the Indian Navy unveiled the crest of Sanshodhak, the fourth and final Survey Vessel Large (SVL) in its fleet.
The unveiling highlights India's growing capabilities in indigenous defense manufacturing and maritime technology. With more than 80% indigenous content by cost, Sanshodhak stands as a strong symbol of the country's push toward self-reliance in the defense sector.
The Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision has been at the center of several defense projects in recent years, and the induction of this advanced survey vessel further strengthens India's commitment to building world-class naval platforms within the country.
The unveiling of the crest marks an important milestone not only for the Indian Navy but also for India's domestic shipbuilding industry. Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), the vessel is the final ship in a four-vessel project awarded by the Ministry of Defence in 2018.
Sanshodhak was delivered to the Indian Navy on March 30, 2026, completing the Survey Vessel Large program. The vessel joins its sister ships in enhancing the Navy's hydrographic and oceanographic capabilities across India's maritime zones.
Designed to undertake detailed hydrographic surveys, the ship will play a vital role in mapping sea routes, navigational channels, harbor approaches, and coastal waters. The data collected by the vessel will support safe navigation, maritime planning, defense operations, and civilian maritime activities.
The unveiling of the crest symbolizes the vessel's official identity and operational significance within the Indian Navy's fleet.

The state-of-the-art vessel has been equipped with a range of modern technologies designed for underwater exploration and marine data collection.
Key features of Sanshodhak include:
These technologies enable the vessel to conduct precise seabed mapping, underwater inspections, and oceanographic studies. Such capabilities are increasingly important as nations focus on maritime security, coastal infrastructure development, and resource exploration.
The crest of Sanshodhak carries deep symbolic significance. The vessel's name, which translates to "Researcher" or "Explorer," reflects its mission of discovering and understanding the maritime environment.
Its Sanskrit motto, "Maargsy Netaa, Saagrsy Vettaa," translates to "Leading the Way, Mastering the Oceans." The motto highlights the ship's role in guiding maritime operations through accurate hydrographic information and advanced ocean studies.
The crest represents the vessel's commitment to excellence, exploration, and technological advancement while reinforcing India's expanding maritime capabilities.
Survey vessels serve as critical assets for modern naval forces. Accurate hydrographic data is essential for naval operations, commercial shipping, disaster response, and port development.
Sanshodhak will support the Indian Navy by providing updated seabed information, identifying navigational hazards, and conducting oceanographic research. The vessel's capabilities will also contribute to safer maritime trade routes and improved coastal security.
As India's strategic interests continue to expand across the Indian Ocean Region, advanced survey platforms such as Sanshodhak will play a crucial role in enhancing situational awareness and operational preparedness.
