Union Minister Pralhad Joshi announced that India achieved its highest-ever yearly growth in wind energy, adding 6.1 gigawatts (GW) of new capacity during the 2025–26 financial year. The milestone reflects the country’s increasing focus on renewable energy and sustainable power generation.
The minister described the achievement as a major step in India’s clean energy journey. The strong growth highlights rising investment and continued support for the wind power sector, helping India strengthen its renewable energy footprint.
India now has more than 56 GW of installed wind power capacity, making it one of the leading countries in green energy production. In addition, nearly 28 GW of wind projects are currently under development, indicating strong momentum for future expansion.
The country also has significant untapped wind energy potential. Government estimates suggest India could generate around 1,164 GW of wind power, especially through improved renewable infrastructure and higher installation heights.

India aims to increase its wind energy capacity to 100 GW by 2030 and 156 GW by 2036. These targets support the country’s broader commitment to reducing carbon emissions and achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.
Wind power plays an important role in balancing electricity demand because it often produces energy during evening and night hours, when solar generation is lower. This makes wind energy an effective partner to solar power in creating a more reliable renewable energy system.
Supportive government measures, including renewable energy policies, competitive bidding, and investment-friendly regulations, have encouraged private companies to participate in the sector. These initiatives are helping expand infrastructure, strengthen manufacturing, and speed up sustainable development.
As demand for clean electricity continues to rise, wind energy is expected to remain a major contributor to India’s energy transition. Continued policy support and large-scale investment could further accelerate growth in the years ahead.
