The government of India has revised aviation turbine fuel norms under a new order aimed at modernizing India’s aviation fuel framework and supporting cleaner air travel.
The updated rules, issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, expand what can be classified as aviation turbine fuel and open the door for alternative and blended energy sources.
The revision of the aviation turbine fuel norms allows broader fuel composition, including synthetic hydrocarbons, blended components, and pathways for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), reflecting India’s shift toward lower-emission aviation. It also permits ethanol blending and other alternative inputs that can reduce dependence on traditional fossil-based jet fuel.

The move is also expected to improve long-term energy security and encourage investment in cleaner aviation technologies. Officials say the updated aviation turbine fuel norms will help align domestic standards with global practices, ensuring smoother adoption of new fuel technologies across airlines operating in India.
Beyond fuel classification, the order also updates enforcement provisions, aligning search, seizure, and compliance rules with current legal frameworks. This is aimed at tightening oversight while supporting the transition toward cleaner aviation fuel systems in the country.
The changes in aviation turbine fuel norms come at a time when the global aviation sector is under pressure to cut carbon emissions. Industry experts believe the move could attract investment in sustainable fuel production and help India build a stronger ecosystem for alternative aviation energy.
While traditional jet fuel will continue to dominate in the short term, the revised framework is expected to gradually support wider adoption of cleaner blends. Airlines may also benefit from more flexible sourcing options in the long run, though immediate operational costs are unlikely to change significantly. The government’s push signals a long-term strategy to balance energy security, environmental goals, and aviation sector growth.
