
Indian aviation sector is now entering a new era of revolution with the successful implementation of satellite-based navigation systems.
The construction of the GAGAN (GPS-Aided GEO-Augmented Navigation) system has enabled the nation to make use of this technology for helicopters as well.
This was with the authorization of the Point-in-Space (PinS) Instrument Approach Procedure at the Undavalli Heliport in Andhra Pradesh. This development can be seen as an important step towards improving safety, accessibility, and efficiency in aviation.
The Indian efforts towards satellites for aviation started with the implementation of GAGAN, a program meant to enhance the precision of GPS and facilitate safe flights. Especially in bad weather conditions. As in the recent years, this innovation was implemented in fixed-wing flights like planes and helped land them precisely and reliably.
Similarly, another step forward was made, and PinS was introduced for helicopters that normally rely on visual cues for navigation or ground-based navigation facilities. The PinS system has been made operational at the Undavalli Heliport. That makes it the first ever heliport in India to use this satellite-based navigation system for helicopters. The DGCA approved system has been introduced with the support of the Airports Authority of India.
Using this system, helicopters can now land without depending on ground-based radar or navigational aids. It is especially helpful in regions that lack the necessary infrastructure for such services.
This system has the capability to direct the helicopters precisely while landing under difficult weather conditions. The adoption of this system at Undavalli is not just a local success story but rather a test case for more widespread adoption in the future.
