Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for a Rs 1,010 crore City Gas Distribution (CGD) project in Alipurduar and Cooch Behar districts, marking a significant step toward enhancing clean energy access in West Bengal. The initiative aims to supply piped natural gas (PNG) to over 2.5 lakh households and more than 100 commercial and industrial units, while also establishing 19 compressed natural gas (CNG) stations to support vehicular traffic. This project aligns with the government’s Minimum Work Programme (MWP) targets, promoting affordable and eco-friendly fuel solutions.
Speaking to a cheerful crowd, Modi shared his excitement about West Bengal’s place in India’s bright future. “This land of Alipurduar is not only connected by borders but also by cultures, with Bhutan on one side and Assam’s greetings on the other,” he said with a smile. He called the gas project a “lifeline of progress,” explaining how it’ll replace clunky LPG cylinders with a steady gas supply and open up new job opportunities for locals.
The project ties into bigger efforts to upgrade West Bengal’s infrastructure. Modi pointed to recent wins like the Purva Expressway, an expanded Kolkata Metro, and a revamped New Jalpaiguri Station. This CGD initiative will help cut pollution, save folks money on fuel, and make energy more dependable. Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar and other leaders joined the event, which also served as a lively BJP rally to drum up energy for the 2026 state elections.
