JSW Energy has unveiled a major expansion of its Salboni thermal power project, boosting capacity to 3,200 MW and increasing the total investment to around ₹40,000 crore in West Bengal.
This move, announced at the Business and Industry Conclave 2025 in Kolkata, marks one of the largest private-sector power investments in the state’s history and signals a strong industry bet on rising energy demand.
The company’s original Salboni plan, a 1,600 MW (2×800 MW) ultra-supercritical thermal plant, is already under construction with environmental clearance in place. JSW Energy’s Joint Managing Director and CEO Sharad Mahendra said the expansion will be carried out in phases, conditioned on regulatory approvals and securing fuel linkages. This phased rollout reflects a strategic, long-term effort to strengthen the firm’s thermal portfolio while supporting West Bengal’s growing power needs.

The expanded Salboni plant will operate under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) and will use domestic coal under the SHAKTI B (IV) policy, helping ensure fuel security and cost-effective generation.
Industry observers see the capacity scale-up as part of JSW Energy’s broader push to build resilient energy infrastructure in eastern India. Alongside power generation, the JSW Group is expanding its logistics and industrial footprint, including ventures in port services at Kolkata Port and associated infrastructure, aligning with integrated growth plans across energy, logistics, and industrial development.
At a time when India’s energy demand is rising, this Salboni thermal power project expansion underscores JSW Energy’s confidence in thermal generation’s role in meeting base load requirements while advancing regional industrial growth.
