The Centre is set to come up with new rules for the cab aggregators and may fix the surge pricing rate at up to three times the base fare. Taxi-booking apps like Uber and Ola have now long been urging in the favor of surge pricing as it helps regulate the demand and supply of cabs on their respective platforms.
As per a senior official, who is aware of the deliberations going on about the issue, the Centre will release some new guidelines in accordance with those proposed in December 2016.
“Surge pricing is intrinsic to the demand and supply situation of cab aggregators. Like with the December 2016 guidelines, our policy will mention surge pricing and what should be the kind of capping, among other things," informed the officer.

The Karnataka government has already set a minimum and maximum price slab for cab aggregators, making it the first state in the country to do so.The set fare varies from the cost of the vehicle and for small vehicles the slab of surge pricing is set at 2X.
The upcoming proposed rules will be in accordance with the new motor vehicle law and will treat cab aggregators as digital intermediaries or marketplaces. The new rules will directly be applicable to the cab aggregators like Ola and Uber all across the country. However, the state government will have the authority to make amendments in the rules, given they provide valid reasoning for the variance.
