BMW India is targeting more than 30% of its EV sales as demand strengthens, with the luxury carmaker planning another locally assembled EV to expand its presence in India’s growing electric vehicle market.
Hardeep Singh Brar, President and CEO, BMW Group India, said the company expects its electric vehicle share to rise to 30% or more by the end of the calendar year.
BMW’s EV share has already increased to 26%, up from 21% last year, while the broader luxury industry has moved from around 4–5% to 6–7%.
BMW is considering local assembly of the BMW i5 long-wheelbase electric sedan as it looks to strengthen its BMW India EV strategy. The model would become the company’s second locally assembled electric vehicle and follows strong customer interest in its existing EV offerings.
The company believes expanding its electric vehicle portfolio will help it capture a larger share of India’s luxury EV market. BMW has also increased its focus on long-wheelbase models, which have become a significant part of its sales mix.
Brar said the company’s strategy of combining EVs with long-wheelbase products has helped it grow faster than competitors. Long-wheelbase models currently represent 52% of BMW India’s portfolio, and the company expects around two-thirds of its future volumes to come from these vehicles.
The focus reflects the importance Indian premium car buyers place on rear-seat comfort and space. By offering more long-wheelbase variants, BMW is seeking to differentiate its portfolio while expanding its appeal among customers who prioritize passenger comfort.

BMW’s expansion comes as competition remains intense in India’s luxury car market. The company has sold around 1.6 lakh cars in India cumulatively, with approximately 30,000 units, or 20%, being long-wheelbase variants.
Brar said BMW has maintained an average growth rate of more than 15–16% over the past four to five years, allowing it to outperform several competitors. The company has continued to record strong growth even as parts of the luxury vehicle market have remained relatively subdued.
BMW India’s retail sales reached 9,075 units in the first half of 2026, representing a 17% increase from the year-earlier period. Mercedes-Benz remained ahead with 9,768 units through June.
The company has already completed 13 launches in 2026 and plans another 12 across sedans, SUVs and EVs. The expanded product pipeline is expected to support BMW’s growth strategy as it seeks to maintain double-digit growth and strengthen its position in India’s premium automobile market.
With electric vehicles becoming a larger part of the luxury car segment, BMW’s ability to expand local EV production and offer products suited to Indian customer preferences will be central to its next phase of growth.
