Daimler’s Oragadam facility is supported by more than 400 local suppliers, with about 92 percent of BharatBenz product value localized. The company also supplies transmissions from Chennai to Daimler Truck plants in Germany.
Pithampur has been the global manufacturing hub for Volvo Group’s 5 and 8 litre engines since 2013. VECV’s chairman, Siddhartha Lal, said the transmission investment builds on technical capability developed over the joint venture’s history.
The status of each project differs. The Daimler amount is a non-binding facilitation memorandum of understanding with the Tamil Nadu government, so it is a proposal and not committed expenditure.
Daimler’s chief executive, Torsten Schmidt, said Indian customers need trucks and buses with higher uptime, safety, reliability and operating efficiency.
Ashok Leyland’s Lucknow plant is commissioned, and its annual capacity is 5,000 vehicles. Ashok Leyland’s parent group chairman, Dheeraj Hinduja, said the group aims to rank among the world’s ten largest commercial vehicle makers.
Plant location follows supplier clusters, port access (Chennai for Oragadam and Hosur) and highway links to freight markets.
Chakan, Jamshedpur and Hosur are also established Indian commercial vehicle Industry hubs. Rising sales do not by themselves indicate higher capacity utilization or profitability, because plants differ in shift patterns, product mix and available capacity.
