Waaree Energies Limited has begun construction of a large-scale solar ingot and wafer manufacturing facility in Nagpur, marking a major step in strengthening India’s domestic solar manufacturing ecosystem.
The groundbreaking ceremony signals progress in the country’s push to boost energy security and cut dependence on imported solar components as the renewable energy sector continues to grow rapidly.
The upcoming project in Butibori, near Nagpur, will have a 10 GW production capacity for solar ingots and wafers, making it the largest integrated ingot and wafer manufacturing complex in India. The facility will strengthen the upstream segment of the solar photovoltaic value chain, which is critical for producing solar cells and modules.

Spread across nearly 300 acres, the project is being developed with an investment of around ₹6,200 crore. The plant will manufacture high-purity solar ingots and wafers, essential raw materials used in solar module production. By expanding domestic capacity in these components, Waaree Energies aims to reduce India’s reliance on imported materials and build a stronger, more resilient solar supply chain.
Once operational, the facility is expected to generate over 8,000 direct and indirect jobs, supporting regional economic development, industrial expansion, and skill creation in Maharashtra.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by several government leaders and industry stakeholders, including Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, and Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways.
Speaking at the event, Hitesh Doshi, Chairman and Managing Director of Waaree Energies, said the project represents an important step toward strengthening India’s upstream solar manufacturing capabilities. He emphasized that building domestic capacity across the solar value chain is essential to support the country’s clean energy transition and reduce import dependence.
Doshi also highlighted Nagpur as a strategic location due to its strong industrial ecosystem and national connectivity, which will support large-scale manufacturing and logistics operations. The Waaree Energies solar ingot and wafer project aligns with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative and the broader vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
