In a big push to the renewable energy sector in India, Karnataka has become the country leader in the capacity addition of wind power in the financial year 2024-25. The state registered 1,331.48 MW to move to the top of the nation and second after Tamil Nadu, which registered 1,136.37 MW, and third-ranked Gujarat recorded 954.76 MW. The feat was awarded in the Global Wind Day 2025 celebrations held at Bengaluru. Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, awarded the prize to K J George, Karnataka Energy Minister.
“This is not just a number—it is a reflection of Karnataka's unwavering commitment to clean energy,” George said while accepting the award.
Pointing out that Karnataka has a dynamic renewable strategy, George said that the total installed wind energy capacity in the state currently is 7,351 MW which highlights its continued tendency in leading the field of sustainable energy development.
"Karnataka is preparing to implement 17 GW of wind power projects, with over 5 GW planned under the Renewable Energy Cluster Programme. Infrastructure is being strengthened through the establishment of more than 20 substations, 400 KV corridors, and a Renewable Energy Reserve Zone," he stated.
