India's Rare Earth Plan is gaining momentum as Andhra Pradesh prepares to allocate land for projects worth Rs 20,000 crore aimed at building a domestic rare earth processing and permanent magnets industry.
The move is expected to strengthen the country's Rare Earth Plan by reducing import dependence and creating a complete rare earth supply chain that supports EV manufacturing, renewable energy, electronics, and defense.
The state government is expected to complete the land allocation process within the next four to six months. Officials are evaluating locations in the Nellore-Tirupati belt and areas around Visakhapatnam, both of which offer industrial infrastructure and strong logistics connectivity for large manufacturing projects.
India has long depended on imports for processed rare earth materials and high-performance magnets, with China dominating the global market. Rare earth elements are essential for producing powerful magnets used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, smartphones, robotics, aerospace systems, and military equipment.
By developing domestic processing facilities, India aims to move beyond exporting raw materials and instead manufacture high-value products within the country.
The proposed investment includes:
Industry experts believe building processing and magnet manufacturing capacity is one of the biggest gaps in India's critical minerals strategy. Filling this gap could improve supply security for several fast-growing industries.
The proposed projects are designed to create an integrated ecosystem, covering everything from processing rare earth materials to manufacturing finished magnets. This approach is expected to support India's expanding EV manufacturing sector, which requires reliable supplies of permanent magnets for electric motors.
The investment also comes at a time when countries around the world are looking to diversify their supply chains for critical minerals. China's dominance in rare earth processing has encouraged governments and manufacturers to explore alternative production hubs.
Officials from the Andhra Pradesh Economic Development Board are reportedly holding advanced discussions with companies from Japan and Canada to attract investment into the state. International partnerships could help bring advanced processing technologies and manufacturing expertise to India.
The Andhra Pradesh initiative aligns with the Union government's broader strategy to develop domestic capabilities in critical minerals and rare earth processing. The Centre has already announced a Rs 7,280 crore program to promote the manufacturing of sintered permanent magnets, which are widely used in electric mobility and renewable energy technologies.
The Union Budget for 2026-27 also proposed developing rare earth corridors across Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Odisha to strengthen India's domestic supply chain.
If implemented as planned, the Andhra Pradesh projects could play a major role in reducing India's dependence on imported processed rare earth materials while supporting industries that are expected to drive future economic growth.
With global demand for electric vehicles, wind energy equipment, and advanced electronics rising steadily, developing a strong domestic rare earth supply chain could improve India's competitiveness in global manufacturing. The upcoming land allocation marks an important step toward building an integrated ecosystem that supports clean energy, defense, and next-generation industrial production.
