ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has initiated a revolutionary Continuous Galvanising Line (CGL) in its Hazira plant and this project should come as a piece of good news to the automotive manufacturing industry of the country.
Being the first-of-its-kind in India that has the capacity to manufacture Advanced High-Strength Steel (AHSS) with strengths of up to 1180 megapascals (MPa), this state-of-the-art plant will make AM/NS India a provider of world-class quality steel used in automobile makers.
The new CGL which was opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is part of a 60,000-crore expansion program, which will make high-grade and corrosion-resistant steel for safety, durability, and sustainability of vehicles. The plant has a production capacity of 2 million tonnes per year, which will replace imports and meet the 15 per cent imported requirements as opposed to 8-9 million tonnes per annum of automotive steel requirements in India. The trend will not only help the Indian auto manufacturers to mitigate the cost of foreign exchange but will also allow the companies to manage their inventory by practicing just-in-time method, thereby saving huge.
The CGL is furnished with the latest technology that its parent firms ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel could provide and as a result, the quality of their steel has passed the test with the standards provided in advanced nations. The line will generate steel to manufacture lighter and safer cars that are fuel efficient, which go with trends that exist in the automotive industry worldwide.

The expansion of the Hazira plant, such as 8,500 crore rupees investment in increasing the downstream capacity to 5 million tonnes by the end of the year, highlights the intentions of AM/NS India to serve the ever-increasing demands of the auto and appliance sectors. It helps in the India vision of making things in India so that the imports of high grades of steel is minimized and local manufacturing sources are boosted.
