
PTC Industries has secured a prestigious order from the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), one of the most critical research and development centres under the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), marking a significant milestone for India’s advanced materials and aerospace manufacturing ecosystem.
The process will include conversion of 40 tonnes of Grade 1 Titanium sponge into Ti-6Al-4V Titanium alloy ingots, manufactured by means of a Double Vacuum Arc Remelting ( Double VAR).
The key elements of this sophisticated metallurgy are necessary to address the high-quality, purity, as well as performance requirements needed in space and aerospace applications, where the integrity of the materials is a determinant of the success of the mission.

VSSC is in the lead in the development of space launch vehicles, propulsion systems and aerospace research in India. The joint venture underscores the increasing dependence of indigenous resource strengths by ISRO in essential materials that can be used in the launch vehicles, satellites, and space exploration missions.
Ti-6Al-4V and other titanium alloys are commonly applied in aerospace structures because they have a high strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and can be applied in severe thermal and mechanical environments.
The order boosts its capability to remain a major supplier of high-performance titanium and superalloy parts in critical industries such as space, defense, and aerospace, among others. The Double VAR process guarantees high-metallurgical quality, and the material is appropriate for use in high-reliability projects.

This is also in line with the overall Indian drive towards self-reliance in high-level manufacturing through the Atmanirbhar Bharat program, which reinforces local supply chains of space-grade raw materials and minimizes foreign reliance.
