GAIL (India) Limited has announced an investment of ₹130 million in Leafiniti Bioenergy, a subsidiary of TruAlt Bioenergy, as part of its efforts to strengthen its presence in the compressed biogas (CBG) sector and support India’s clean energy transition.
The investment comes under a shareholding agreement through which GAIL will acquire a 49% stake in Leafiniti, while TruAlt will retain a 51% majority. The partnership aims to scale up CBG production by setting up new projects across different regions of the country.
In the first phase, the joint venture plans to establish six greenfield CBG plants in Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Odisha. Each of these plants is expected to produce around 12 tonnes of compressed biogas per day, contributing significantly to the overall supply of renewable energy.
The initiative will primarily use agricultural waste—especially residues from sugar mills—as feedstock. This approach not only helps generate renewable energy but also addresses the issue of waste management. In addition, the plants will produce organic manure as a by-product, which can improve soil quality and support sustainable farming practices.
Apart from environmental benefits, the project is also expected to create job opportunities in rural areas. It is estimated that hundreds of direct and indirect jobs will be generated during the initial phase, contributing to rural development and local economic growth.
This collaboration brings together GAIL’s strong infrastructure and distribution network with TruAlt’s expertise in bioenergy production. The move is seen as a strategic step towards reducing dependence on fossil fuels and promoting alternative fuels in India.
The investment also aligns with the government’s SATAT scheme, which encourages the production and use of compressed biogas as a cleaner and more affordable fuel option.
