In a major drive towards indigenous defence production, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has entered into over 2,000 technology transfer agreements in 2024. The achievement is a significant boost to indigenous defence strength of India through the 'Make in India' initiative.
DRDO has so far transferred more than 1,400 technologies to almost 350 industries, facilitating local production of strategic systems, as per top officials. Nine strategic land-based technologies such as the CBRN Recce Vehicle Mk-II, Mounted Gun System, and Arjun Mk-1A tank transporter in June alone were transferred by DRDO to ten firms such as BEML, Bharat Electronics, Tata Advanced Systems, and Bharat Forge.
"Over 2000 agreements were signed for technology transfer licenses," Chandrika Kaushik, Director General (PC&SI) of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) said while speaking at the CII Manufacturing Conclave East in Kolkata.

These technologies, including those designed at the VRDE lab of DRDO, are already being tested in operations such as Operation Sindoor, where indigenous platforms reportedly surpassed foreign-origin platforms. DRDO Chief Samir V. Kamat reiterated the intensified interaction between public R&D and private production, which is now being institutionalized by organized partnerships.
This technology transfer expansion, not only induces an enhancement of India's national security but also generates defence exports and industrial scale-up possibilities, so the Indian defence industry becomes operationally effective and globally competitive.
