India's Railwheel Manufacturing is set for a major expansion after Jupiter Wagons partnered with Italy's Lucchini RS and SIMEST.
The partnership aims to build an integrated manufacturing platform for Railway Wheels, Railway Axles, and Wheelsets in India.
The move is expected to strengthen railwheel manufacturing, reduce import dependence, and support the growing demand from Indian Railways and global markets.
The strategic partnership will combine Jupiter Wagons' existing railwheel facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar with a new greenfield plant planned in Odisha. Together, the facilities will create one of India's largest integrated private-sector railwheel manufacturing platforms. The agreement also marks another step toward strengthening domestic railway component production under the Make in India initiative.
As part of the deal, Lucchini RS and SIMEST will jointly invest €28 million to acquire a 25 percent stake in Jupiter Tatravagonka Railwheel Factory Private Limited. Lucchini RS is a global manufacturer of railway wheels, axles, and forged components. Its technology and manufacturing expertise will help improve product quality and production capability in India.
SIMEST, an Italian government-backed investment company, is supporting the international expansion of Italian businesses. Its investment reflects confidence in India's growing railway manufacturing sector.
The collaboration will combine Italian technology with local manufacturing capabilities. This is expected to improve production efficiency and strengthen India's position in the global railway supply chain.
"This partnership marks a defining milestone in our vision of building a globally competitive railwheel manufacturing ecosystem in India. It will strengthen India's self-reliance in critical railway components while positioning the country as a trusted global manufacturing hub," said Vivek Lohia, Managing Director, Jupiter Wagons.
The integrated platform will include Jupiter Wagons' operational manufacturing unit in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and the upcoming plant in Odisha. The Odisha facility will manufacture railway wheels, axles, and complete wheelsets for passenger and freight rolling stock.
Demand for these products has increased as Indian Railways expands its network and modernizes rolling stock. Domestic production can reduce reliance on imported components while improving supply security. The partnership also supports India's goal of building a stronger rail manufacturing ecosystem capable of serving both domestic and export markets.
"The partnership with Jupiter Wagons enables us to establish a structured presence in the Indian market through a strong industrial platform with significant growth potential, supported by SIMEST, CDP and the Italian institutional ecosystem," said Giuseppe Lucchini, Chairman, Lucchini RS.
