Prime Minister Narendra Modi will mark a decade of the Startup India initiative, National Startup Day, and entrepreneurship ecosystem on January 16 with a dedicated programme in New Delhi. The event underscores ten years of government-led efforts to build a structured and supportive environment for startups across the country.
Startup India was launched on January 16, 2016, with the aim of strengthening innovation-driven businesses, improving access to capital, and simplifying startup regulations for new businesses. The initiative was designed to encourage innovation, support first-generation entrepreneurs, and promote sustainable economic growth through enterprise creation.
Over the past ten years, the programme has contributed to the formal recognition of over two lakh DPIIT-recognised startups, spanning sectors such as technology startups, manufacturing startups, healthcare, agriculture, and clean energy. These startups have played a role in job creation, development of indigenous solutions, and expansion of India’s innovation footprint beyond major urban centres into Tier II and Tier III cities.
The National Startup Day programme will bring together startup founders, venture capital investors, incubators, accelerators, and policymakers. During the event, selected entrepreneurs are expected to share their experiences, outlining startup challenges, funding constraints, and regulatory issues while scaling their businesses. The interaction is intended to provide direct feedback from the startup ecosystem to policymakers.

Prime Minister Modi is also expected to address the gathering, highlighting the progress made under Startup India policy, outlining priorities for deep-tech startups, and strengthening India’s startup ecosystem. The tenth anniversary serves as a review point for assessing policy outcomes and signals continued government support for entrepreneurship as a driver of economic growth, employment generation, and self-reliance.
