Piyush Goyal Pushes Global Access for Farm Exports

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal chaired a high-level meeting on Thursday to strengthen global market access for India’s agricultural and marine products, with a strong focus on boosting Indian farm exports through better international compliance and trade support.

The meeting brought together officials from key ministries, export bodies, and regulatory agencies to discuss ways to improve sanitary and phytosanitary standards, commonly known as SPS measures, which play a major role in global food trade.

The government is aiming to help Indian exporters meet stricter safety and quality requirements imposed by countries such as the United States, European nations, Japan, and Gulf markets.

During the discussions, officials reviewed steps needed to improve testing infrastructure, certification systems, traceability, and sustainability standards for exported products. The government believes these measures will help Indian agricultural and seafood products gain wider acceptance in premium global markets while reducing shipment rejections linked to quality concerns.

The meeting also focused on improving coordination between exporters, regulatory authorities, and state agencies to speed up approvals and remove trade barriers affecting Indian farm exports. Officials stressed that stronger compliance systems would not only support export growth but also improve earnings for farmers, fishermen, and food processors across the country.

The government has been pushing to expand India’s share in global agricultural trade as part of its broader export strategy. Industry experts say improved market access and stronger quality standards could help India increase shipments of rice, spices, seafood, fruits, vegetables, and processed food products in the coming years.

The latest discussions signal a renewed push by the Commerce Ministry to position India as a more reliable supplier in the global food and agriculture market.
